2007 AGM Minutes:
Minutes of the 2007 AGM accepted as a true record. There were no matters arising.
Chairman’s Report A. Lee circulated his report to the members (See below) This was accepted and members debated the format of finals night now that there are too many competitions to hold on one evening. After a healthy debate covering four alternatives it was proposed by J. Tarr and seconded by M.Bell that the finals of the Junior Competitions would be held at Redlands and the rest at the Stanley Street Club. This was passed unanimously.
General Secretary’s Report The secretary’ report was circulated (See below) which included the Wilcox Trophy Competition and the Annual Championships. This was accepted. In order to keep matches flowing and save time, it was suggested from the floor that the Doubles Competitions should be scheduled first.
Match Play Secretary’s Report
M Tunningley circulated his report to members which was accepted (See below)
Treasurer’s Report
The Audited Annual Accounts were presented and accepted. The Treasurer recommended a £1 increase in fees to £21 and £11. It was proposed by M. Bell and seconded by D. Lee that this be accepted.
Cup/Shield Secretary
The secretary recorded his disappointment at the lack of commitment of players to the second night. It was proposed by M. Bell, seconded by D. Lee that the competition be run on a knock out basis. This was passed unanimously.
DTH Senior Doubles
This competition was supported in person by the sponsor and it was disappointing that players didn’t stay on to watch the conclusion of the tournament.
Diamond Premier
Some difficulty over handicapping but this was eventually resolved.
Reg Wilcox Competition and Annual Championships
This was covered in the General Secretary’s report.
Election of the Executive Committee All positions were filled as per last year with the exception of the Annual Championships Secretary. This position is vacant.
AOB.
It was agreed that a venue in Retford could be used on a temporary basis until the Bassetlaw Centre was ready.
It was suggested by J. Tarr that it was time to re-think the Presentation Night. It was agreed that the committee would look at the alternatives.
The meeting closed at approximately 9.30pm.
During 2007/8 following the Formation Meeting, your committee has met on 7 occasions. There was no meeting in June due to the AGM. The attendance has been good and very few problems to cope with. I was unable to attend the February meeting due to holidays, and my thanks to our Chair for completing the minutes for me.Due to a date change, I was also unable to attend the presentation evening. The committee is mindful of the need to avoid school holiday periods, when arranging this event in future years.
WILCOX TROPHY
I was very pleased with the outcomes of this tournament. The winning margins throughout the tournament were no larger than 30 to 40 points. Well done to all those Division 2 players who participated and made this such a good tournament and to Mr. T’s team in winning the final. Once again thanks to our Chair who kept an eye on the early rounds whilst I was away.
ANNUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
These were their usual ‘slog’ in trying to keep all the tables occupied so that we can all go home at a reasonable time. I am sure we could do better but I am not sure how. Any suggestions to the committee would be welcome as would any volunteers to run it. The committee was disappointed in the number of entries compared to the number of players registered. My thanks to Tommy Brown for helping me on the day and to everyone who helped to get matches going.
Finals Night itself went very well and I would like to record our thanks to Shaun Lee for transporting the table to and from Redlands. I have written to Shaun to thank him. The one hic-cup was two players, who had reached the Draw Doubles Final, decided to withdraw due to other commitments. Your committee decided to re-instate two losing semi-finalists by drawing them out of the hat. The committee had to make a decision as to which competitions should have the final played on finals night as there are now too many competitions to have them all.
Finally may I wish you all a successful season in 2008/9.
Firstly on behalf of the league I wish to thank Dave Hooton of DTH Engineering for his continued sponsorship and commitment to our sport.
Overall it has been another successful season on and off the table and enjoyed by all. Over the course of the season there has been some high and lows. I will start with the lows. Once again the DTH Senior doubles event was well supported with entries. This is an event our sponsor pays particular attention to as the event was introduced into the league programme at his request and at which Dave Hooton attends regularly every year. The disappointing thing this year was, that it was very noticeable that after the group stages a lot of players left the event to leave the semi-finalists to play in front of our sponsor and just a couple of other players. The actions of these players who left the event early disappointed me greatly and showed a lack of support to the league and our sponsor. If these players had reached the semi finals themselves I am sure they would have stayed. Dave Hooton has supported us for many years and we cannot take it for granted this will continue so please next season can we all make an effort to stay until the conclusion of the event.
Another competition affected this year was the Carnation Cup with the group stages run over 2 weeks. Another good entry but the disappointing thing was players unable to attend the 2nd week of play an thus affecting the results and play dramatically. In some cases players attended to play in the 2nd week were finding out there opponents had not turned up and worse some absent players not notifying organisers. Next season before sending in your entry in to the competition please make sure you are available for both weeks. To help, the committee will provide specific dates the competition will be held rather than just which week.
It was a slow start to the season in respect of reducing the number of fines incurred by teams but overall fines have reduced over the season so please for next season lets reduce that further. Less fines means fixtures are being played on time with a full compliment of players which is good for all.
On behalf of the league I wish to congratulate all this seasons winners and runners up on a successful season and a special mention to Sarah Perks and Sam Walker who have performed exceptionally nationally this year and all other players who continue to put Worksop on the map.
Changes to Finals night were made this season by staging less finals and moving the Open Singles final to the middle of night instead of the end. This decision meant all finals were completed by a reasonable time, increase in the number of spectators witnessing the highlight of the event (Open Singles) and an increase in number of spectators staying to the conclusion of the event. This was well received and we envisage to continue with this format in the future.
We have replaced a number of Annual Trophies this year which have deteriorated over time and this will continue over the next few years.
Not quite last, I would like to thank my fellow committee members for all there hard work, support and commitment over the past year.
Finally can I ask that all players consider and take part in the numerous events we hold each year to increase entries and support this league. In opening my report for last season, I am pleased to say that there has been a marked improvement in all aspects of our sport, both in the league and at national level. Fines are at last falling ( £175 in total ) this year but still too much, mainly with errors on the scorecards still being the main problem. Sadly Ardagh Glass formerly known as CWS and Rockware, are no longer with us next season after 73 consecutive years in the league – the longest in the league’s history by any club. One can recall some terrific nights of table tennis at the Sandy Lane venue over many years and thankfully the memories for a great number of players will remain forever.
My only other gripe this year was the lack of respect shown by two players who chose to play in the Sheffield League while their one man team played in a cup semi-final in Worksop. This action not only made a mockery of the handicap system, but they showed no consideration for either their own team nor the opposing team, plus the cup sponsor was hugely disappointed as he had made a 30 mile round trip to watch the match. With hindsight this situation could have been avoided, so in future if players are involved in fixture clashes, please act responsibly towards your fellow table tennis colleagues.
2007/08 Review
October
Manton Panthers were the surprise team of the opening month after remaining undefeated and topping the First Division for the first time in their history after gaining a 6-4 win over one of the title favourites DTH Redlands Roosters. Manton Sports head Division Two as early leaders with the Tarr Babies hot on their heels, but at the end of the month the Morris Men led the chasing pack following a 7-3 win over the Tarr Babies. In Division One three teams are joint top: The Roosters, The Panthers and The Humpties as the league moves into November.
November
Mark Short and John McClellan take the DTH Engineering Senior Doubles title after defeating Peter Eyre and Russell Kemp. Veteran Mick Bell celebrated his 60th birthday with a fine treble against the Panthers who became the last team in the division to lose their 100% record
December
Manton Tigers net their first win of the season with a 8-2 win over newly promoted Carlton Rovers, while in Division Two Ray Lucas who hasn’t lifted a bat since 1966, bagged his first hat-trick of the season for the Allstars in a 10-0 win over the Teddy Bears. MBE sponsor new Over 60’s Veterans competition in Annual Championships. Panthers still surprising everyone and are in joint second spot along with The Humpties and MBE
January 2008
Teddy Bears gain their first win in Division Two with a 6-4 victory over Ryton Park Dragons while Manton Tigers defeat Division One leaders The Roosters by just six points in the Diamond Premier. The table tennis table at Manton disappears – the hunt is now on. The Allstars became the only team to take a point off Manton Sports as they look destined to return to Division One after just one season.
February
The title challenge hots up in Division One with the Roosters top, Humpties in second and MBE third, but at the end of February all three teams were joint leaders after the Humpties gained a 7-3 win over the Roosters. Jason Ramage seeded No 1 in Open Singles with Sam Walker at No 2. Peter Eyre seeded No 1 in Division Two with Dennis Learad at No2.
March
Roosters trounce MBE whose hopes of landing the title begin to fade, but with Rhodesia holding the Roosters to a 5-5 draw, it was the Humpties who led by just one point as the league enters it’s final phase. Manton Sports take the Division Two Title and are duly promoted while there is a thrilling battle developing for the runners-up spot between the Tarr Babies, the Morris Men and the Allstars who were coming through on the rails after putting together a string of good results.
April
Sarah Perks became the highest placed Worksop League player as she played magnificently to reach the semi-final stage of the Ladies Singles in the National Championships which were held at Ponds Forge Sheffield. Lea Dickinson remained undefeated on her England debut in a six nation tournament held in the Isle of Man. 12 year old Sam Walker won two Mens Single titles in Blackpool as well as the Player Of The Tournament Award, before taking the national Under 13 title in Norwich to complete another highly successful season. Ardagh Glass lose the Mike Tunningley Shield Final, going down to the Humpties who then went on to land the Division One championship. Russell Kemp followed in his fathers footsteps after winning the Carnation Cup with his partner Peter Eyre. His dad Geoff took the Cup back in 1982 – the pair defeated Steve Walker and Richard Snowden in the final. South Korean Joseph Kang joins the Allstars and helps the rank outsiders take the Division Two runners-up spot after a last match 6-4 victory over their main rivals the Morris Men. The Allstars also won the Reg Wilcox Trophy again against the Morris Men in a exciting two-match night of table tennis. MBE landed the Diamond Premier Trophy after defeating the Humpties and finally the Player of the Year was Sam Walker.
